Haagen Dazs meaning, why it’s so expensive but worth it

Haagen Dazs Meaning
Haagen Dazs and its meaning? It is the question that came to my mind first few times of having it. In this article, I talk about how I fell in love with it, fun facts, as well as my personal favorites from the many flavors.

Haagen Dazs: The Only Ice Cream I get

I am pretty picky when it comes to sweets because to be honest. I personally prefer potato chips or something salty rather than sweet for snacking in general. Few desserts I do love are creamy or buttery texture: good examples include cheesecake, buttery cookies, and peach pie. Anything overly sweet, colorful, and artificially flavored actually make me lose appetite just by looking at it.

Before I knew about Haagen Dazs, ice cream was not something I normally craved for. When out with friends, I sometimes got ice cream with waffle cones from a local ice cream store maybe less than five times a year. I have tried ice cream brands sold at the grocery stores of course. Sadly, most of them tasted low quality, artificial, and even upset my stomach (I am mildly lactose intolerant).

After tasting Haagen Dazs, I fell in love with the rich flavor and creamy texture. Sure, it was significantly more expensive than other brands, but I thought the quality difference was so worth it even as a teenager. From that point, I would get Haagen Dazs or cheesecake for dessert after school now and then. It has been more than ten years and I still buy Haagen Dazs and Haagen Dazs only. I love the creamy texture, the rich flavors, and the short, natural ingredients list. Plus, it never upset my sensitive stomach!

Haagen dazs Meaning & facts

When I have good food, I search its health benefits, ingredients, or recipes out of curiosity. Today, I had green tea ice cream from Haagen Daz and as per usual it tasted creamy delicious. I wanted to know what ingredients make it so good. Here are a few facts I found interesting about the company.

FACT no.1: Haagen Dazs meaning? Nothing!

It sounds Danish right? Well, it is made up and has no meaning.

Reuben and Rose Mattus established the brand in Bronx, New York (1961). Many assume it’s an European company because of the name.

fact no.5: only the best ingredients

Haagen Dazs aims to use the best ingredients in the world. Another goal is to remove GMO ingredients completely. Flavors without GMO ingredients have the no GMO” sign.

Fact no.6: Premium Ice Cream – more butterfat less air

“Premium” ice cream such as Haagen Dazs contains 16 percent butterfat with less “overrun or air whip.”This results in the dense (less air incorporated), creamy texture (lesser quality ice cream often only has 10 percent butterfat with more air incorporated).

expensive but it’s worth it

I had no doubt that Haagen Dazs was a good quality ice cream brand by its rich flavor even before reading these facts. After finding out about the history and their mindset, it made more sense why it costs a lot more than other brands.

You look at the sizes of the ice cream containers and think that you are paying way more for the amount when buying Haagen Dazs. Now knowing that Haagen Dazs has way less “air whip” process, just made me remember how I thought these were so heavy for their size. Other brands’ containers are larger, but ice cream itself is often airy and less dense. I also learned that the reason why Haagen Dazs melts so quickly is because of this same reason: more air incorporated, the longer it stays frozen. One last thing I found interesting was the fact that the cheaper ice cream forms ice crystals on top because of the lower percentage of butterfat. Learning about how brands use so may unnatural ingredients including chemicals to reduce the production costs, it is even harder to not choose Haagen Dazs.

My favorite Haagen Dazs Flavors

I can’t say that I have tried every ice cream they carry, but I have tried quite a few flavors of their bars, ice cream, sorbet, and yogurt. Here are the top flavors I love and recommend!

Ice Cream [Vanilla]

It’s by far the most aromatic and creamy vanilla ice cream you can get
from a super market. So creamy! I love it.

Ice Cream [Strawberry]

Haagen Dazs strawberry ice cream is just as creamy as vanilla but a little more fruity of course.
Little bits of frozen strawberry add that tangy, sourness to this sweet ice cream.
It’s a little sweet for my taste bud so I get it when I am really craving sugary stuff.

Ice Cream [Coffee]

Strong coffee aroma and flavor! I get this flavor a lot.

Ice Cream [Green Tea]

I think their green tea ice cream sold in Japan and Korea are darker both in color and taste.
The one I got in the states was definitely less dark green and it tasted very mild.
It was more like green tea milk ice cream! The Asian version I think was pretty bitter and less milky.
Either versions no doubt contain high quality matcha green tea though. I love Green Tea!

Ice Cream [Butter Pecan]

Well I mentioned how I love anything buttery.
Butter Pecan is probably my number one Haagen Dazs flavor
I end up getting. I just love the buttery flavor with that nutty pecan!!
You MUST try it.

Bar [Vanilla Milk Chocolate Almond]

We get this at Costco and it is creamy vanilla ice cream
coated in good quality milk chocolate with almond bits.

Sorbet [Mango]

I love sorbet and Haagen Dazs has a few sorbet choices.
I used to get mango when I was younger.
It’s good sorbet and tastes wonderful but a little too sweet for my taste.
If it had less sugar then I will probably get it more often!

Honorable Mention

Haagen Dazs Strawberry Cheesecake - only ice cream I eat (blog post) - simple ingredients and high quality ice cream

Ice Cream [Strawberry Cheesecake]

It was my go-to ice cream in high school but looks like it’s been discontinued.
I loved the little cheesecake bits in the ice cream. It was so good!

It’s like Homemade ice cream

I know ice cream itself is not a healthy choice of food so I don’t have ice cream that often. I try to stay health conscious as possible when eating food and ingredients do matter. I love that Haagen Dazs uses only five ingredients all natural that you can actually pronounce. It is like getting homemade ice cream without making it yourself. I am impressed that this brand has been trying their best to make high quality ice cream for 50 years. Well, that is all for this post. It’s time for me to get some Haagen Dazs from my freezer! I hope you found this article informative.
